Box Elder

Box elder bugs as adults spend the winter months in protected places such as houses and other buildings, cracks or crevices in walls, doors, under windows and around foundations, commonly on south and west exposures.  At times they come out during winter when it's cold outside, but the sun is shining.

In the spring, when the box elder tree buds start to open, small red eggs are laid on leaves and crevices in the bark of female box elder trees. The eggs later hatch into the young nymphs that are wingless and bright red in color with some black markings. The young bugs will usually stay on structures or low vegetation around the box elder or other host trees until seeds are formed on the tree, which they will then start to feed on.
